Random Rant

So I am not going to mention the brand name here, but anyone who is a parent or just remembers being a kid in America knows that there is a school photography monopoly stronghold, and they are relentless in their persistent and hostage-like marketing and sales tactics. They do shit like take your child's photograph, print out the Premium Package without your purchasing it in advance, and ship the photos home with your kid, so if you don't want to pay for the Premium Package, you have to send the photos back with your dejected kid, who wonders why you don't want the pictures of them. And they want you to buy 'extras' too; keychains, coffee mugs, etc. with your child's image on them, which they email you about incessantly, particularly around Mother's Day and the winter, gift-giving holidays.

Well, assholes, I want to say, that I know I'm his mother, but my kid is handsome. Photogenic. He is. Always has been since he was an infant. And he's a happy kid with innate kindness and a broad and generous sense of humor. It's easy to make him laugh. He's smart enough to get highbrow obscure references and wordplay and he's without pretension so he still thinks farts and cats falling down and dogs eating pickles on video are funny. And yet...not once...NOT ONCE...from preschool to 10th grade...have you taken ONE SOLITARY good photograph of my son. I've taken thousands. J has taken thousands. The parents of his teammates and friends have taken dozens. My mother, who can't take a good phone photo to save her life usually, has taken at least 5 or 6 good ones of my son. So like...fuck off with your monopoly marketing. I don't want your shitty pictures. Not when I can take 50 better ones myself when he rolls out of bed this morning.
